Umpiring at Metro Jets

Our umpires are more than just whistle blowers. They’re on the court to keep the game fair and make sure everyone gets to play netball in a friendly, safe and fun way. There are some added bonuses too – you’ll be part of a vibrant netball community and get pretty fit. And you don’t need to be a netball expert. We’ll give you everything you need to understand the game and keep things fair.

Umpiring is an integral component of netball and is essential to the progress and success of the sport.

As independent arbiters, umpires are ideally positioned to apply the rules to the best of their ability, without fear or favor, and to make decisions in the interests of the game and its tenets of equal opportunity and sporting conduct. Skilled umpiring enhances the standard of the game by complementing and encouraging skilled play, for the enjoyment of participants and spectators alike.

WHAT IS THE BEGINNER UMPIRE PROGRAM?

The Beginner Umpire Program strives to support beginner umpires within the Metro Jets community. It aims to increase retention, value and appreciation of all officials by making beginner umpires easily recognizable wearing the shirts as below. The program itself is run all year round, because every opportunity is a good opportunity, and through a 2-year period.

IS THIS THE SAME AT THE “NETBALL SA COLOURED SHIRT PROGRAM?”

No – the Beginner Umpire Program is unique to Metro Jets.

IS THERE TRAINING?

Yes – there is training in the Winter season. There is a minimum of 10 structured sessions on Tuesday night, before or after team training for convenience. There are also online rules discussions and n-court practice throughout the season. On this, each beginner umpire receives a mentor for each game.
